Visual Arts – Primary

VISUAL ARTS

At Singapore International School (Hong Kong) [SISHK] we believe everyone can enjoy and achieve in art and design.  Art shapes our everyday lives. It can be playful, imaginative, make a social statement, or be purposeful. It is a means of expression and allows our children to explore the styles of artists that inspire their own work or simply  appreciate and celebrate aesthetic beauty.

Framework for 21st Century Competencies and Student Outcomes

Through art, students can develop core values, social and emotional competencies and 21st Century Competencies that would better prepare them to face future challenges as well as seize opportunities brought on by forces such as globalisation, changing demographics and technological advancements

INNOVATIVE THINKING

Art enables us to look beyond and leads people to create for the sake of expression and meaning and different purposes. It is paramount to dig deeper in the Visual arts so students  engage through critical thinking skills to tap on their creative potential to be innovative.

With the aim to develop our students’ creativity as problem solving skills, at SISHK, we inspire children to think innovatively and develop creative procedural understanding. Students are introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the elements and principles of art and vocabulary used by famous artists. Art concepts and skills which they acquire can be applied across subjects such as English, Chinese, Maths and Science which allows them to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY

In Primary Years, our children are exposed to a large range of media – drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art. This helps them to further develop their tactile, cognitive, and visual spatial skills and they are also given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.

Through practice students improve and gain confidence and it helps them to believe in their own abilities. They learn that it takes time to find an approach that works best for them! This helps to develop their resilience to take on new challenges in many other areas of their life.

GROW CONNECTED

To nurture our children’s growth, students are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and develop their mastery of Art and Design techniques. When children get a chance to express their creativity and dive into art, they develop confidence, appreciation, increase their empathy and discover how to look at the world and make connections from different perspectives. All these skills help prepare students to take on the world with passion and creativity.
