Curriculum
The curricular goal of the Science department is to foster the spirit of scientific inquiry and a love and appreciation for Science.
The Science department endeavours to make our Science lessons meaningful and engaging for every student by providing them with authentic learning experiences and different opportunities to play and explore. For example, students get first-hand experiences dissecting owl pellets, observing mealworms, plants and fungi as well as playing with bubbles, slime and toys during their Science lessons. By providing interesting hands-on activities and authentic learning experiences, we hope to help our students understand Science concepts and appreciate the application of Science in their daily lives, society and the environment.
Our Science teachers adopt the inquiry approach and incorporate cooperative learning in the teaching and learning of Science. Students are given plenty of opportunities to carry out research, investigations and discussions in small groups and learn from one another.
To engage our young digital natives, the Science department has implemented blended learning and harnessed the use of technology in our curriculum. This helps to open the door of unlimited learning and allows students to access their learning materials at their own time and space. The use of virtual labs and simulations also allows students to access learning contexts that are beyond their classroom setting and further extend their learning experiences. At the same time, online quizzes and discussion platforms are used by our teachers to engage students further and to assess their understanding.
The Science department also organises learning journeys for students to stimulate their curiosity about their environment and help them appreciate how Science influences or impacts people and the environment. Some of our learning journeys include visits and workshops at Woodside Biodiversity Education Centre, Mai Po Nature Reserve and Ocean Park.
In October 2021, the Science department embarked on hydroponic farming in school with six units of hydroponic facilities. Our P3 students have the opportunities to participate in various activities in this special interdisciplinary project involving the Science, Math, Art and CGCE departments. The students are involved in planting and taking care of the vegetables. These vegetables will then be shared with the elderly homes in our community as part of our Science Community Involvement Programme.
Many of us learn best when we have fun and we remember the things that we enjoy doing. The Science department hopes to instil the joy of learning in our students by engaging their hearts and minds. We also hope to nurture inquisitiveness in them so that they will become lifelong learners. Finally, we hope that their joy of learning will go beyond school and into their adult lives and may inspire some students to pursue Science-related careers in future.
