Curriculum
The Mathematics curriculum at SISHK is academically rigorous. It is designed to nurture a passion for Mathematics and enables students to use their mathematical problem-solving skills in everyday life. The curriculum is currently divided into a 2-2-2 system, namely two years of lower secondary mathematics, two years of upper secondary mathematics and two years of senior year mathematics programmes.
In lower secondary, the curriculum is based on the Singapore curriculum and prepares our students for the study of mathematics at the IGCSE and Diploma levels. The curriculum focuses on building a strong foundation in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. Students are expected to be inquisitive and to be able to articulate their reasoning.
For IGCSE, students are enrolled into the Dual Mathematics programme where students read both the Mathematics (0580) and Additional Mathematics (0606) concurrently and sit for the examinations in secondary four. Students will be exposed to advanced mathematical techniques and further develop their knowledge of mathematical concepts and principles.
Diploma students can choose to read the Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (MAA) subjects at either Higher or Standard Level. These subjects focus on developing important mathematical concepts in a comprehensible, coherent and rigorous way, achieved by a carefully balanced approach. Students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems set in a variety of meaningful contexts.
Joy of Learning Mathematics
A classroom where ‘Joy of Learning’ exists is one in which students are given appropriate levels of challenges and one in which they are able to make decisions about their learning. Students also experience joy when the learning environment is a positive one. In SISHK, the Mathematics teachers strive to inculcate the joy of learning in Mathematics through various strategies.
- Understanding the purpose of learning Mathematics.
- Variety of questions to develop students’ conceptual thinking, skills and metacognition.
- Integration of technology
- Mathematical Modelling
- Mathematics Challenge
Assessments
The department uses both the pen and paper and alternative assessments to assess students’ learning. These assessments allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts learnt and as well as extend their knowledge beyond the core curriculum. These assessments also serve as platforms to inform teachers about the students’ learning.
- Mathematical Investigation
- Topical Assignments
- Formative & Summative Tests
- IBDP Internal Assessments
