Physical Education – Primary

SISHK Primary Physical Education programme aims to impart knowledge, understanding and skills to create a foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle. To inculcate the joy of learning, each unit of teaching allows time for students to learn new skills and explore movement. Students are also taught how to manage emotions through competing in games. The experiences students get when scoring a point, hitting a basket or completing a run makes the learning even more enriching. Teachers provide feedback and students are encouraged to discuss, exchange ideas and reflect on their learning every lesson.

In Primary 1 and 2, the focus is on the learning of Fundamental Movements Skills (FMS). FMS is a specific set of skills that involve different body parts such as feet, legs, trunk, head, arms and hands. Foundational movements such as running, catching and balancing are also introduced.

The Primary 3 and 4 programme allows students to develop more complex and specialised motor skills that are required in different sports. Games are modified to suit the teaching level and drills are customised to the needs of the students. Positive transfer of learning in sports will be the focus of learning at this stage. Transfer of learning occurs when the previous experience of performing a skill is beneficial for the learning of a new skill or for performance of the same skill in a different context. Students will apply the transfer of learning in actual game situations through participating in various categories of territorial-invasion, net-barrier and striking-fielding.

In Primary 5 and 6, we introduce a student-centered Sports Education Module. Students are assigned different roles, but not limited to – Coach, Team Captain, Team Manager, Player, Referee. Responsibilities and duties of each role are explained to students before a gradual release of responsibility. Students then take charge of their assigned roles and carry out their duties accordingly, under the careful guidance of the teacher.

Swimming is an essential life skill and students receive formal swimming lessons throughout their primary years. Students are taught water safety rules and swimming techniques. Exposure from a young age helps young children overcome their fear of being in and around water quickly. The swimming programme aims to develop confident swimmers who enjoy taking part in water activities.
