Science – Primary

The aim of SISHK Primary Science curriculum is to foster the spirit of scientific inquiry and a love and appreciation for science around them. Using the Singapore Science Syllabus, Primary 3 to 6 students work towards being lifelong learners by nurturing inquisitiveness.

Our Science lessons provide ample opportunities for self-discovery and exploration. For example, Primary 5 students learn about the reproductive parts of a flower by dissecting flowers and Primary 4 students learn about life cycles through observing mealworms. Through these hands-on activities and authentic learning experiences, students understand science concepts and appreciate the application of Science in their daily lives.

Cooperative learning is a crucial part in the teaching and learning of Science. Students are given plenty of opportunities to carry out research, investigations and discussions in small groups to learn from one another.

To engage our young digital natives, the Science Department harnesses the use of technology in our curriculum. The use of virtual labs and simulations allows for learning beyond the classroom setting and further extends learning experiences. Students can access learning materials at their own time and pace. Online quizzes and discussion platforms are used by our teachers to engage students and to assess understanding.

The Science Department organises annual learning journeys to stimulate curiosity and help students appreciate how Science impacts people and the environment around them. Some of our learning journeys include visits and workshops at Woodside Biodiversity Education Centre, Mai Po Nature Reserve and Ocean Park.

In October 2021, the Science department embarked on a hydroponic farming project. Currently, six units of hydroponic facilities have been set up around the primary school compound. An interdisciplinary unit involving the Mathematics, Art and CGCE departments is included in the Primary 3 curriculum. Students are involved in planting and caring for the plants. These plants are then harvested and shared with the elderly homes in our Aberdeen community.
